Parents, Always Take Childhood Injuries Seriously — Protect Their Growth Plates! -Understanding Salter-Harris Fractures

Parents, Always Take Childhood Injuries Seriously — Protect Their Growth Plates!

As parents, it’s heartbreaking to see your child get hurt. Whether it’s a fall during a soccer game or a trip on the playground, injuries are often brushed off as “just a sprain” or “growing pains.” But sometimes, what looks like a minor injury could be something far more serious — like a Salter-Harris fracture that affects your child’s growth plates.

At West LA Chiropractic™️, we urge parents to take all childhood injuries seriously, especially when they involve joints like the ankles, knees, wrists, or elbows. Here’s why:

🚨 What Are Growth Plates — and Why Are They So Important?

Growth plates, or epiphyseal plates, are the soft areas at the ends of long bones where bone growth happens in children and teens. Because these areas are still developing, they’re more vulnerable to injury than fully matured bone.

Damage to a growth plate can lead to:

  • Uneven limb growth
  • Permanent deformity
  • Chronic pain
  • Long-term mobility issues

⚠️ Understanding Salter-Harris Fractures

A Salter-Harris fracture is a specific type of break that involves the growth plate. It’s classified into five different types based on severity, and even the milder types can interfere with normal bone development if left untreated.

Many of these fractures don’t show up clearly on initial X-rays, which is why early detection and proper follow-up are critical.

👨‍⚕️ Why See a Child Chiropractor?

With safe, non-invasive chiropractic care, we work alongside pediatricians and orthopedic specialists to ensure your child’s full recovery.

✅ What Parents Should Watch For After an Injury

Even if your child seems fine, keep an eye out for these signs after an injury:

  • Persistent swelling or pain near a joint
  • Limping or avoiding weight-bearing
  • Asymmetry in movement or posture
  • Limited range of motion
  • Complaints of pain during play or activity

If you notice any of these, don’t wait. Schedule an evaluation to rule out serious issues like a growth plate injury.
