**Common Childhood Injuries and How We Can Help at West Los Angeles Chiropractic**
At West Los Angeles Chiropractic, we have been dedicated to serving families for over three decades, helping children recover from common injuries caused by sports and active play. As parents ourselves, we understand the joy that comes from watching our children explore, play, and thrive. However, we are also aware of the challenges that arise when injuries occur, causing not just physical discomfort but also emotional distress for both kids and parents.
One prevalent condition we frequently encounter in young athletes is Osgood-Schlatter disease. This injury primarily affects the knee area and is most common in children aged 10 to 15, particularly those involved in sports that involve running, jumping, or rapid direction changes, such as soccer, basketball, or track. Osgood-Schlatter disease occurs due to the repeated stress placed on the growth plate just below the kneecap, leading to inflammation and pain. The discomfort can be particularly detracting, making activities like running, climbing stairs, or even sitting for prolonged periods difficult and painful for our young athletes.
Understanding the physiology behind Osgood-Schlatter is crucial. As children grow, their bones and muscles undergo constant changes. The patellar tendon, which connects the kneecap to the shinbone, pulls on the growth plate during physical activity. The repetitive strain can cause irritation and discomfort, leading to the characteristic symptoms of swelling, pain, and tenderness below the kneecap. If not addressed properly, this condition can hinder your child's performance in sports and other physical activities they love.
At West Los Angeles Chiropractic, we are committed to providing effective care for young athletes facing such challenges. Our office is equipped with advanced in-office digital X-rays, allowing us to conduct a detailed assessment of your child's condition.
